Bivouac at the Island of Groix

passage de pen men en kayak

Just for a weekend…

The Island of Groix is 4 nautical miles away from Ploemeur.

After a one and a half hour crossing, we’ll glide along the cliffs of the bird sanctuary which extends from Beg Mélen to Pen Men. Birdwatchers will be able to see gulls, cormorants, but also rare species such as shelducks and razorbills. These cliffs also abound of gooseneck barnacles, very popular in Spain and Portugal. Still picking them is strictly forbidden.
A break for picnic lunch is planned in Port St-Nicolas, the first shelter along the south coast. In the afternoon, a short navigation will await us to reach our bivouac. Groix is famous worldwide for its garnet and green shale.

The next day we’ll navigate along this unique mineralogical reserve via the Pointe des Chats. Then, we will end up in an even more famous place: the beach of Grands Sables, which is especially famous for its convex shape.
The tuna, which has replaced the rooster at the top of the church steeple, is a reminder of Groix’s former fame being the ranked first tuna port in France. We’ll have a break in Port-Tudy, to enjoy a drink and check the weather forecast before our return crossing.
